Tacherra Ranch Residents 

Statement of the Tacherra Ranch Residents for the May 10th Bolinas Civics Group Community Meeting at 6pm at the Bolinas Community Center

Hello my name is Hector and I have lived and worked in Bolinas for 20+ years, until my family and I moved out of town last year when we could not find affordable housing. Today, I am speaking to you on behalf of some of my good friends.

If you hear about 50+ people living at the Tacherra Ranch that is just a number. But there are real people behind it.

These people, who are mostly Latinos and Latinas, do not read the Hearsay. They don’t yet feel like they belong in community meetings like this one. When they learned there is public discussion happening about them, without them, they asked to share this message with you:

We have lived in Bolinas and on the Tacherra Ranch for 20, 16, 8 years. We are your neighbors.

Our children were born here, go to school here, work here, and some have now had children of their own here. We have large extended networks of family living here that would be broken up if we have to move out of town.

You already know us. We are the parents of your children’s friends, the people you rely on to take care of your garden, clean your house, do construction, grow your food, take care of the farm animals you like to have nearby, cook the food you enjoy, and serve you in our local restaurants. Our cultural traditions are rich and have brought peace and joy to many of your lives. We are hardworking people who contribute our labor, intelligence, love and creativity every day to keeping this community going.

We are part of the essential fiber of this community. Bolinas is our home, too.

We need to hold onto our HOPE that we can improve the situation that we and the Tacherra Family have become trapped in. Jim and Susan Tacherra gave us a place to live when nobody else would. But now it is not a good situation for any of us. It needs to change as soon as possible.

Many of us now live in conditions that are worse than the homes we left. It is not normal for us to live this way. We are not accustomed to it as some people have said. It hurts our dignity.

We stay living in conditions that nobody should have to live in because Bolinas is the only home, or only other home, most of us have ever known. There is a bad shortage of affordable housing here in Bolinas, West Marin, and Marin County. That means we don’t have many options to move to somewhere better.

We just want to keep our families together, work hard, and be healthy. We do not want to take anything away from you. You do not need to be afraid of us.

If you did not know where we lived before, or that so many of us lived on the Tacherra Ranch in very difficult conditions, it is because we are strong and resilient people. Our hardships have been hiding in your plain sight for two decades. We may make it look like everything is ok, but it’s not. Our fear of losing what little we have has also kept us from speaking up. But, now we have to, because now we have hope for a better future and that is worth taking a risk for.

All we ask from you, now that you know more about us, is this —

Please do not use your privilege, your extra time, your money, and your better education to fight to deny us the hope of a better future for our children. Children who are American citizens and who are growing up to love and care for this community as much as you do. As much as we do.

We want the Tacherra Ranch to be sold to the BCLT so that we can be part of creating a good solution that benefits our entire community. We respectfully welcome your support to do that.

Hola, mi nombre es Héctor y he vivido y trabajado en Bolinas por más de 20 años, hasta que yo y mi familia nos mudamos fuera del lugar por no poder encontrar vivienda a precio accesible. El día de hoy, hablo en representación de algunos de mis buenos amigos.

Si escuchan hablar de más de 50 personas viviendo en el Rancho Tacherra, eso es sólo un número, pues hay personas de verdad tras esa cifra.

Estas personas, en su mayoría Latinos y Latinas, no leen el Hearsay. No sienten todavía pertenecer en reuniones comunitarias como ésta. Cuando se enteraron que habría pláticas públicas sobre ellos, sin ellos estar presentes, pidieron compartir este mensaje con ustedes:

Hemos vivido en Bolinas y en el Rancho Tacherra por 20, 16 u 8 años. Somos vecinos suyos.

Nuestros hijos nacieron aquí, van aquí a la escuela, trabajan aquí y algunos han tenido hijos aquí mismo. Tenemos grandes lazos de familia extensa viviendo aquí, que se romperían en caso de tener que mudarnos fuera.

Ustedes ya nos conocen. Somos los padres de los amigos de sus hijos, la gente en que se apoyan para cuidar sus jardines, limpiar sus casas, hacer trabajos de construcción, cultivar su comida, cuidar aquellos animales de granja que les gusta tener cerca, cocinar la comida que les gusta, y servirles en los restaurantes locales. Nuestras tradiciones culturales son ricas y han traído paz y alegría a muchas de sus vidas. Somos gente trabajadora que contribuimos con nuestro trabajo, inteligencia, amor y creatividad cada día para mantener esta comunidad andando.

Somos parte esencial del tejido de esta comunidad. Bolinas también es nuestro hogar.

Debemos aferrarnos a nuestra ESPERANZA que podemos mejorar nuestra situación en la cual tanto la Familia Tacherra como nosotros nos hemos visto atrapados. Jim y Susan Tacherra nos dieron un lugar donde vivir cuando nadie más lo hizo. Pero esta situación no es buena para nadie de nosotros y debe cambiar lo antes posible.

Muchos de nosotros vivimos en condiciones mucho peores que las que dejamos anteriormente. No es normal vivir de esta manera. No estamos acostumbrados a ello, como algunos han dicho, hiere nuestra dignidad.

Nos mantenemos viviendo en condiciones que nadie debería vivir porque Bolinas es el único hogar, o el único otro hogar que muchos de nosotros han conocido. Hay una pésima falta de vivienda accesible aquí en los condados de Bolinas, West Marin y Marin. Esto significa que no tenemos muchas opciones para mudarnos a un lugar mejor.

Lo único que queremos es mantener a nuestras familias unidas, trabajar duro y tener salud. No queremos quitarles nada a ustedes. No deben tener miedo de nosotros.

Si ustedes no sabían dónde vivíamos anteriormente, o que viviéramos tantos en el Rancho Tacherra en tan difíciles condiciones, es por qué somos gente fuerte y resistente. Nuestras dificultades les han sido desconocidas a plena vista por dos décadas. Pudiéramos hacer creer que todo está bien, pero no es así. Nuestro temor de perder lo poco que tenemos nos ha impedido manifestarnos, pero debemos hacerlo porque ahora tenemos la esperanza de un futuro mejor por el que vale la pena arriesgarse.

Todo lo que pedimos de ustedes, ahora que ya saben un poco más sobre nosotros, es esto –

Por favor, no usen sus privilegios, tiempo extra, dinero y mejor nivel educativo para luchar contra nosotros y negarnos la esperanza de un futuro mejor para nuestros hijos. Hijos que son ciudadanos americanos y quienes han crecido para amar y cuidar esta comunidad tanto como ustedes, tanto como nosotros.

Queremos que el Rancho Tacherra sea vendido a BCLT para poder ser parte de crear una buena solución que beneficie a toda nuestra comunidad. Agradecemos respetuosamente su apoyo para conseguirlo.
